NORTH GATE
The Northern Entrance to Hornerville
THE NORTH GATE
The North Gate is where countless journeys into Hornerville begin. Merchants, adventurers, farmers, pilgrims, mercenaries, and travelers from across the realm pass beneath its stone towers every day.
The gate is protected by the Hornerville Town Watch, with towering Half-Giant guards stationed below and skilled archers watching from above. Beyond the walls, the road opens into a city alive with market stalls, wagons, conversation, music, and people from nearly every race in the known world.
For newcomers, the North Gate offers their first glimpse of what makes Hornerville different.
All roads may lead to Hornerville, but every traveler arrives with a different story.
WHAT YOU MAY FIND HERE
The North Gate never truly sleeps. Travelers arrive from the northern roads throughout the day, bringing news, merchandise, warnings, and occasionally trouble into Hornerville.
Adventurers can speak with the Town Watch about recent disturbances outside the walls, examine public notices, ask arriving merchants about distant settlements, or listen for rumors carried in by travelers.
Weapons aren’t forbidden, but drawing one without cause will bring the Watch down on you quickly.
Services: Directions • Travel Information • Caravan Arrivals • Town Watch Assistance • Local Rumors
Adventurer’s Tip: Pay attention to who is entering Hornerville. Sometimes the most important adventure in town hasn’t actually reached town yet.
PEOPLE YOU MAY MEET
Gate Captain Bren Torren
A veteran Half-Giant officer of the Hornerville Town Watch. Bren has watched the North Gate for years and rarely forgets a face. He is calm, professional, and considerably harder to fool than his quiet demeanor suggests.
Lysa Vale
A Half-Elven tower scout stationed above the gate. Lysa watches the northern road and surrounding countryside, often spotting approaching travelers long before the guards below know they’re coming.
Old Merrick
A human wagon merchant who spends so much time around the North Gate that newcomers occasionally mistake him for a city employee. Merrick knows caravan schedules, traveling merchants, road conditions, and an unreasonable amount of other people’s business.
ADVENTURE HOOKS
The Traveler Who Only Arrives After Sunset
For the third time this month, the same well-dressed traveler has entered Hornerville shortly after sunset. His papers are always in order, he is polite to the Watch, and nobody has any legal reason to stop him. Lysa Vale has noticed something strange, though: she has never once seen him leave.
The Empty Caravan
A merchant wagon rolls toward the North Gate just before dawn. The horses are exhausted, the cargo remains untouched, and there is no sign of the six people who left with it. One guard insists there is something unusual about the marks along the wagon’s wooden frame.
A Package Wrapped in Silver
A nervous courier arrives carrying a small locked parcel wrapped with thin strips of silver. He refuses to explain what is inside, who hired him, or why he was specifically instructed not to open it after dark.
The Family From the Northern Road
A family asks the Watch for permission to enter Hornerville before sunrise. They’re frightened, exhausted, and claim someone has been following them for two nights. Their youngest child quietly tells an adventurer something the parents haven’t mentioned: the person following them looks exactly like their uncle.
The Guard Who Doesn’t Remember
A veteran North Gate guard disappears during his night shift and returns several hours later unharmed. He remembers nothing about where he went. Bren Torren believes him. What bothers Bren is the tiny amount of dried earth beneath the guard’s fingernails, because it isn’t soil found anywhere near the North Gate.

THE TOWN WATCH
Where Hornerville’s problems eventually become somebody’s paperwork.
THE TOWN WATCH
The Town Watch keeps order inside Hornerville’s walls, but its duties stretch far beyond breaking up tavern fights and chasing thieves.
Travelers report disappearances here. Merchants report attacks on the roads. Families come looking for missing relatives. Bounties are posted. Witnesses are questioned. Adventurers looking for legitimate work often discover that the Watch has considerably more problems than guards available to solve them.
The public notice board outside the Watch House changes constantly. Some postings are mundane: stolen property, escort work, missing livestock, wanted criminals, and requests for experienced trackers.
Others are harder to explain.
Reports occasionally mention homes found locked from the inside, travelers who disappeared without their belongings, witnesses describing the same stranger decades apart, or bodies displaying injuries that don’t resemble any weapon carried in Hornerville.
The Watch records such reports.
It does not necessarily understand them.
For an adventurer looking for trouble, employment, information, or somebody who has gone missing, the Town Watch is one of the best places in Hornerville to start.
CAPTAIN MARA VOSS
Commander of the Hornerville Town Watch
Mara Voss has spent most of her adult life keeping Hornerville from tearing itself apart.
She is practical, observant, and notoriously difficult to impress. Voss has little patience for adventurers who arrive looking for glory, but considerable respect for people who prove they can be trusted when things become dangerous.
Her desk receives reports from every corner of Hornerville and from travelers arriving through its gates. Most have ordinary explanations.
Some do not.
Voss has learned not to dismiss a strange story simply because it sounds impossible. She keeps a separate collection of unresolved reports that she rarely discusses with strangers.
Those who earn her trust may find that the Captain knows considerably more about Hornerville’s unexplained incidents than she admits publicly.

THE WATCH BOARD
The notice board outside the Watch House is open to the public. Notices appear and disappear as problems are reported, solved, abandoned, or become something considerably worse.
CURRENT POSTINGS
MISSING: Two merchants failed to arrive after traveling the eastern road.
WANTED: Information regarding a series of nighttime warehouse thefts near Market Square.
WORK AVAILABLE: Experienced tracker needed. Payment offered upon successful return.
UNRESOLVED: Residents of the same house have reported footsteps from an empty upstairs room for six consecutive nights.
The Watch Board changes as events unfold throughout Hornerville.
THE BLOOD MAGES OF THE HALL
Blood Magic is practiced in many corners of the world, but there is only one place where a practitioner can become a formally recognized Blood Mage.
The Hall of Light.
Some arrive in Hornerville already capable of manipulating blood and life force. Others discover the ability unexpectedly. A few have learned fragments from another practitioner or inherited techniques passed quietly through generations.
The Hall does not claim that Blood Magic begins within its walls.
It claims responsibility for teaching how it should be used.
Blood Magic draws power from something dangerously close to life itself. Without discipline, knowledge, and control, an inexperienced practitioner can injure others, destroy themselves, or produce consequences they do not understand.
For that reason, generations of Blood Mages have traveled to Hornerville to study at the Hall.
Students learn the nature of blood, the limits of their own bodies, the responsible use of life force, and the Hall’s accumulated knowledge concerning death, undeath, vampirism, regeneration, and the strange states that exist between life and death.
Their training eventually includes a series of closely guarded rites. The details of those rites are not discussed with outsiders.
Only after completing the required training and rites does the Hall recognize a practitioner as a Blood Mage.
This has created an unusual bond among Blood Mages throughout the world. They may come from different lands, races, cultures, and generations. They may disagree bitterly about how their abilities should be used.
But every formally recognized Blood Mage shares one thing:
At some point in their life, they came to Hornerville and passed through the Hall of Light.
THE HALL OF LIGHT
The Hall of Light stands among Hornerville’s oldest and most misunderstood institutions.
Despite its name, the Hall is neither a temple nor a place of worship. Its scholars study the boundary separating life from death, and the strange things that sometimes cross that boundary.
Blood. Death. Undeath. Vampirism. Regeneration. Unnatural longevity. Resurrection. Bodies that continue moving after life should have ended. Creatures that exist somewhere between the living and the dead.
All have been studied within these walls.
The Hall is operated largely by Blood Mages, practitioners who believe that blood offers one of the clearest paths toward understanding life itself. Their work has saved lives, identified creatures thought impossible, and helped Hornerville understand threats that ordinary medicine and scholarship could not explain.
It has also made the Hall deeply controversial.
Some citizens consider its researchers indispensable. Others believe certain questions should never be asked, much less investigated inside a populated town.
The Blood Mages continue their work regardless.
Above the Hall’s entrance are words familiar to generations of its students:
THE LIGHT AT THE END OF ALL THINGS.
MASTER CAEL VAREN
First Blood Mage of the Hall of Light
Cael Varen oversees the Hall of Light and carries the title First Blood Mage, a position earned through knowledge and experience rather than inheritance.
Varen has spent decades studying the narrow boundary between life and death. His particular interests include vampirism, unnatural regeneration, failed resurrection, and creatures whose bodies continue functioning long after ordinary life should have ended.
He is neither warm nor cruel. Varen possesses the unsettling calm of someone who has witnessed things most people would struggle to describe and then spent the following morning taking notes about them.
Students quickly learn that he has little tolerance for recklessness. Blood Magic requires practitioners to manipulate forces intimately connected to their own lives, and Varen considers unnecessary risk a sign of ignorance rather than courage.
Adventurers usually encounter him for very different reasons.
Strange remains may be brought before him for examination. The Watch occasionally requests his expertise when a death cannot be explained. Hunters seek his knowledge concerning creatures that refuse to die. Vampires have entered the Hall seeking answers about their own condition.
Varen does not automatically consider the undead enemies.
He considers them questions.
And there are very few questions concerning life, blood, or death that the First Blood Mage is unwilling to investigate.
That last distinction is important for Hornerville. He’s not Van Helsing with a laboratory. A peaceful vampire could sit across from him just as easily as a Hunter could.
HORNERVILLE TOWN SQUARE
THE HEART OF HORNERVILLE
At the center of Hornerville lies a broad stone square where nearly every kind of person eventually crosses paths. Merchants open their stalls at sunrise, travelers stop for directions, children weave through the crowds, and Town Watch patrols keep a casual eye on the constant traffic. If Hornerville has a heartbeat, this is where you hear it.
A THOUSAND SMALL STORIES
The square changes by the hour. Street performers compete for attention, merchants argue over space, messengers push through crowds, adventurers search for work, and strangers exchange news from places far beyond the city walls. Spend enough time here and something unusual will eventually happen, whether you were looking for trouble or not.
WATCH THE CROWD
Hornerville is a city where appearances rarely tell the entire story. A wealthy merchant may be desperate, a beggar may know more than he admits, and the quiet traveler watching from the edge of the square may have very good reasons for avoiding attention. Listen carefully. Look twice. In the Town Square, opportunity and danger often wear ordinary faces.
